Sacraments: Baptism

Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word”.

Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift. We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own.

At St Joseph the Worker Parish, we rejoice in celebrating the sacrament of Baptism and welcoming new members into our community of faith. In preparing parents and godparents, we remind them of their special responsibility in speaking on behalf of their child and forming them in the practice of the Christian faith.

Loving God, we give thanks for the birth of our child and the gift of family life.
We thank you for the gift of faith and the joy of belonging to your family, the Church.

Bless our children with your gifts
of courage, strength, hope and peace.
Help us to be people of faith and prayer for our children, who show to others the light of Jesus which scatters the darkness of our world.

You call us to walk in your love;
To know you, love you and serve you all the days of our life. Walk with us now as we place our trust in you.

We ask this through Christ our Lord
